What is Wrong Here, Hard to find problem?

'00 Ford Contour SE 4 cylinder, 2.0 Engine Front Wheel Drive.

I have a problem where my car vibrates on the freeways and if l'm just driving on the streets, I can hear a low grinding sound... I was told I needed the sway bar links, transmission mounts %26amp; Motor mounts and lower control arms replaced. I have just replaced The Transmission %26amp; engine mounts last year. The sway bar links are covered with grease and the round ends have exposed metal. They said the rubber parts on the lower control arms where worn out. I posted pictures here so you can see the area's I'm talking about. The control arms look like they are lifted or seperated when the car is on the ground, is this how it suppose to look? the transmission is a little too close to the frame, is that normal? It's alot because I tried to get different views. I have changed the cv half shaft, wheel bearing, brake pads %26amp; rotors, and tires, on the side were the vibrating is coming from, but the problems continue. Could these two parts be what is causing the 2 problems if not what could it be? Thanks.

http://cossiomotorservice.com/Images/P10What is Wrong Here, Hard to find problem? If those bushings are toasted on the control arms, you need new arms. Those bushings can't be replaced. They are an integral part of the arm. The sway bar link would not be the problem. Someone trying to squeeze more money out of you. Also, replace the entire shaft and on both sides. Not just the half shaft. What is Wrong Here, Hard to find problem? If those bushings are worn that could definitely lead to a uneven/rough ride... and either way wouldn't hurt to replace them, specifically the control arms. What is Wrong Here, Hard to find problem?if you havent already check to see if a rim could be bent or even check the tires to make sure they are balanced

That is used to read whether the wheel is turning or the brakes locked up in a skid. That is most liely not your problem unless you feel the brakes pulsing. Take it to a mechanic at this point. How to Remove rear wheel from 1994chevy cavalier?

Right - simple enough as I've changed many a flat tire on most every make - done brake jobs etc

However - this beast will not come loose. It seems stuck or rusted on what I figure is a bearing cap.

Used lots of screwloose - wire brush and some force. To no avail.

There is no manual or special tool in the kit.

Word of mouth is it is a common problem.

Oh yeah, not my car, as common maintenence would have likely have prevented all this. How to Remove rear wheel from 1994chevy cavalier?here's what i've had to do many times. loosen the lugnuts out about 2 turns then drive it down your driveway a little and pull the parking brake (since that only stops the back wheels. don't go to fast. just 2-3 miles an hour (a medium role) do it a few times in forward and reverse untill it breaks loose.

yes, this has the potential to damage threads and is used as a last resort when a rubber mallet dosn't work (which i have found useless in the past.) if the lugnuts are only loosened a little and you don't drive it round the block, and just drive it a few feet up and down a driveway you will do no damage. How to Remove rear wheel from 1994chevy cavalier?I cant believe that guys said drive the car with the lugs loose. idiot. that can **** up the threads on the wheel studs. If your rim is rusted to the hub just get a rubber hammer and hit the side of the tire or rim. Should knock it right off.

Car is shaking and steering wheel feels loose...?

I have a 99 Hyundai Accent 5 speed. It is just under 91K miles. I bought it in September. I recently started noticing a shake and the steering wheel felt a little loose, but I just figured it was the tires, so I replaced 2 of the tires, and then went on a road trip (Virginia Beach to Central PA)..I still felt the shaking so I figured it needed balanced. So I took it to get it balanced and changed another tire in the process. But the shaking is still happening..it's at it worst when I hit about 60. I'll have my hands on the steering wheel trying to go straight, but it's like weaving slightly back and forth, with it leaning more toward the right. I started noticing it got really bad on my way home from PA and has gotten progressively worse since then. I've been looking on here and it seems like it's the wheel bearing or the ball joint. And it's weird how it shakes, because it's almost like it goes in a circle..It vibrates for 2 seconds, stops for 2 seconds, vibrates for 2 seconds, etc. I don't want to take it to the shop because my brother can fix what ever it is, it's just the fact that I don't want to drive this car to his house if it's something that could cause me to get in an accident, so could someone tell me what it possibly could be?? Thank you so much!Car is shaking and steering wheel feels loose...?Sound like a power steering rack problems . Have it checked along with you tie rod ends .Car is shaking and steering wheel feels loose...?get an alignment and have the components of the front end inspected....ball joints and tie rod ends to wear out .......

even a bent brake rotor can cause problems.Car is shaking and steering wheel feels loose...?It could be the ball joints or the wheel bearing the best thing to do is have it taken to a shop and have them just do an inspection, not only will that narrow down the problem but it may also be more than just one problem. when they check it out they can tell u everything wrong with the car, so ur brother can fix it for u. To have them do a complete inspection will cost about a 100$ depending on where you go, but can save u some time and hassle later, and also you can know what needs to be done on the car rather than just waiting untill something else breaks.

Rear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I'm driving, except when brake is applied.?

I have a front wheel drive Mitsubishi 380. No too long ago the rear left wheel hit a curb quite hard. The wheel itself survived but now there is a loud squeaking noise coming from the rear wheel. The noise gets quite loud and only lessens as I apply the brakes. Even while driving slowly the squeaking occurs. Also, if I havent driven the car overnight or for a few hours it takes a bit of time for the squeaking to start. I have had a full wheel alignment done and they could not see what was causing the noise. From what I know it's most likely a damaged wheel bearing that is causing the problem but can anyone else suggest what else it could be and how much roughly repair would cost? I have also have the brake pads changed as I thought it couldbe contributing to the squeaking recently but the noise it still there just as before.

ThanksRear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I'm driving, except when brake is applied.?it sounds like a bearing but could be the hub itself suggest you get the mechanic to look at it and give you a written estimate for the repairRear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I'm driving, except when brake is applied.?it could be a wheel bearing or you broke something on the shoes.Rear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I'm driving, except when brake is applied.?Im afraid it is a wheel bearing, I have changed a front bearing by removing the hub assembly and removing the axle nut, then I had to take the hub to have the bearing pressed out, 2hours labor in a shop and a $40 bearing, roughly $220 if I had had it done in a shop

    Wheel bearing?

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings if you go to a shop, is it expensive or is it better to change it your self.Wheel bearing? That depends entirely on the car you have! Most older cars that are rear wheel drive have very inexpensive bearings in them. Many new cars and trucks have the wheel bearing as part of the front hub so parts and labor could be VERY expensive in some cases. BUT EITHER way the price is different on every make and model of car.Wheel bearing? If you don't know how to do it, you're better off getting aa shop to do it. You can easily ruin new wheel bearings if you don't make sure the bearing races are good, and the new ones are tightened correctly. Replacing bearing races is a little more complicated than the bearings themselves.

How hard is it to change a rear wheel bearing?

Really not much harder than doing a front wheel bearing on an old rear drive car, remember them? Remove the drum or caliper and rotor, remove dust cap, remove nut{might be easier to pry off cap and bust nut loose with car still on ground}. The hub/bearing assy should come off, may need puller. Reverse steps with new hub and tighten to torque spec. think its 185 ftlbs. Use a new nut included with hub.

    Rear bearings?

Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?

Hi, i just purchased a 1999 cbr600 f4 a few weeks ago and i rode it for the first time last weekend. I noticed that the back wheel felt a little sloppy (like it wobbled a little bit) so i got off the bike and i could just move the tire a little bit with my hand.

Do the bearings in the rear wheel need to be replaced or is it safe to ride on it like this? Could it be something else? If they do need to be replaced could you help me as to how i would go about doing that. Thanks! Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?download the manual here first...(free).

item106 is Wheel Bearings..Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change? It is definitely NOT safe to ride in its current condition. You need to check and correct the cause of the problem: It could be the wheel bearings, or the swing-arm bearings. I'm assuming that the rear axle is properly tightened. First, you need the service manual for your year/model of bike. There are too many steps and too many specifics (i.e. torque values for reassembly) to learn it all online. Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?Be careful! I wouldn't ride it in this condition if I were you and if you absolutely HAVE to ride very slowly. Sounds like you have either a loose swing arm / rear triangle or your axel just needs to be tightened.

Get this checked out asap or if u feel competent enough try to make sure everything is tight back there.

Good luck with the fix :)Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?Bearings are the likely culprit, it need not be just the wheel bearings though, it could also be the swingarm bearings.

If you can notice a problem when riding they are probably completely shot and are not safe to ride with.

But first check the easy bits, tyre pressure, chain adjustment, fasteners tightened (to the correct torque).

I need help with purchasing a 2004 Impreza, please answer some questions.?

Im thining about buying a 2004 impreza, here are the specs:

    1. No liens on the car.

    2. 2nd owner at 106,000kms There was an under $5000, claim was under the amount where the details had to be given out.

    3. never raced the car.

    4. Canadian car, bought in Prince George

    5. No clutch change, no slip in the clutch. user was super easy on clutches

    6. The only issue: wheel bearing that was replaced by subaru under warranty.

    7. The paint isnt 100%. Being a northern car for most of its life the paint it a bit worn up front. Few tiny dings from poor parking lot care of other people.

I have a few questions to any impreza owners:

    1) when should the clutch most likely need a change?

    2) how much would a clutch and fly wheel change cost approx?

    3) What size tires does it take? and how much approximately would tires cost?

The base clutch change here in the US runs about $700. Tire size on those were 205/55/16 and decent ones in that size can be found here in the US for about 60 to 80 a piece. One hing to note. Fast wheel bearing wear can be caused by very aggressive driving or aftermarket wheels with too low an offset. So I doubt #3 is true. I mean it's the 2nd owner so how do they know?

How can i tell wether or not my t-bird has?

i have a 96 t bird. i already changed the wheel hub assembly on the driver side. the passenger side wheel hub assembly look pretty new. my question is how can you tell which suspension you have? it could be either sport or standard. the passenger side humbs badly and the wheel hub bearing is going out. what could cause a new hub assembly to go bad? could it be just the spindle is wrong for the suspension? How can i tell wether or not my t-bird has?the dealer or internet can tell you by the vin # if there are wires going to the struts or a interior switch to adjust it is sport but that would have nothing to do with wheel bearings if they are correct for the vehicle and went bad it is because they were either to tight, to loose, or not greased properly

Wheel bearing repair messing up brakes?

Hi. I have an 03 Oldsmobile Alero. Yesterday at the local garage I had my front drivers side wheel bearing replaced. Yesterday when I was driving the couple of miles home I noticed something was different. It was steering great but the breaks seemed %26quot;loose%26quot;. I pressed them and they didnt seem as %26quot;tight%26quot; as usual. I drove it about twenty miles today and the breaks are just completely jacked up. They were barely even catchin, they were 10 times more delayed. Just wondering...what could have messed them up.. the pads were recently changed and the rouders rotated..so just wondering what could the mechanic have done to mess things up. and how much would parts cost. thank you.Wheel bearing repair messing up brakes?when the mechanic took the front apart to replace the bearing he would have had to remove the brake calipers from the rotors. Most of the time they don't have to be taken off completely but can be laid aside. If it was completely removed he may not have bled the brakes after reinstalling. If not taken off he may have damaged the brake line when setting it aside. If the brakes are soft and getting worse I would assume there is air in the system. Either take it back and demand it be fixed (free) or take it to another mechanic to have the brake system checked.Wheel bearing repair messing up brakes? You need to have it looked at immediately. The brakes could go completely out. It sounds like they done something wrong when they had it apart.Wheel bearing repair messing up brakes? If it wasn't doing it prior, get it back to the shop and tell them what's up. Nothing else changed on the car. as soon as i was done with the bearing, the car went from getting almost 300 miles a tank to 200. So from 30mpg to 20mpg. I'm thinking it's gotta be the problem. Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?

So, my car has been vibrating really badly when I turn my steering wheel to the left whenever I'm driving around a curve and it does it whenever I'm speeding up too. I took it to the dealership today to get my oil changed and they said my passenger side outer tie rod was bad and so was my driver sider hub bearing. I replaced the tie rod today (the outer one) and the clicking noise I hear when I turn my wheel has decreased but not completely gone and it still vibrates whenever I turn. How badly is my wheel bearing wore out? How long will it last? I'm supposed to get it done Thurs but I'm scared it's something more than the wheel bearing. Help!Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?Ok, first off I'd be a bit skeptical about a wheel bearing for 60 bucks. The wheel bearing for your car is a whole hub assembly, so unless they are going to press the bearing out and press in a new one (about an hour labor with a hydraulic press so $20 to put it on seems cheap now) that sounds like a cheap assembly. Depending on the braking systems of your car (4 wheel ABS or 2 wheel ABS) the hubs cost about $168 from NAPA. As far as the problems is concerned, if the problem was with the drivers side bearing then you would notice it turning to the right; all the weight shifts to the opposite side when turning. Like others to answer, I would have them check the tulip (CV) joints in the CV shaft on the passengers side. As far as safety is concerned, if the bearing does seize up while you are driving that can cause the car to pull in the direction of the seizure so if you are not ready for it you can swerve pretty bad in that direction. I've seen bad bearing last for 2 days after making noise and I've seen them last for 6 months...it's really a crap shoot.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?Sounds more like CV joints to me.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?could be a CV joint..if you can't afford a car, don't drive one...everything needs maintenance.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala? Why didn't you have them do the bearing while you were there? Then you would know.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala? This happened to my 2003 Impala last year. I drove on it for maybe two days after I noticed the vibrating. grinding whenever I sped up or turned and my dad told me that I shouldn't have so I would guess you should do it pretty quick, I think it was like $110. My car mainly did it when I was going fast.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala? It's hard to say...the ball bearings in these American cars suck...my friend has a Cavalier and has had bearings go bad in two different front wheels. The first time he drove around in it like that for a month or two, lol, then it got real bad (loud). So it can last a while but it depends on how bad it is, the position, everything. Let it go too long and you will really **** it up so just be careful, drive it slow, and you should def last til Thursday. Just make sure you get it taken care of then and don't delay it further.Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?CV to meWheel bearing? 2000 Impala?Good deal on a bearing... cheap to put on.... what the hey. It's not like that hub assembly holds your wheel on or anything... go cheap. That's definately the best idea....Wheel bearing? 2000 Impala?it could be the cv joint or the wheel bearing.

I need to get my front wheel bearing fixed..who do i trust?

i bought my first car about 7 months ago. so far all ive had to do is change the oil, and i actually believe thats it. the place i go to is always friendly and nice to me. and they checked my problems in my car and told me i need to get my front wheel bearing fixed (he even showed me how the whole tire just wobbles, and its not supposed to do that)

but my girlfriend took her car there i guess and she had a tranny leak, and all they did was do a flush and refill it, and she said that they were stupid for not even noticing the leak cause even she could see it... and they also did a diagnostics on her car and didnt tell her her timing belt was bad, or battery was nearly dust.

shes telling me to go to her mechanic. but i dont know what to do. it seems like theres always someone who hates a shop, and someone who likes a shop. is replacing a bearing so difficult that i could be screwed if i go to the place i usually go to? i just want it done right cause its gonna cost me 300 dollars.

thing is tho she drives a 200 jetta, i drive a 95 camry. so im sure my car is much simplier to work on..I need to get my front wheel bearing fixed..who do i trust?if you trust this guy, then go to him......

definitely find a mechanic you can trust, and take your car there for everything... a good mechanic will keep records on your car,and warn you of problems that are developing....I need to get my front wheel bearing fixed..who do i trust?go to a toyota specialist or even the dealership, they should know how to deal with their own model carsI need to get my front wheel bearing fixed..who do i trust?do you know someone who is handy with cars? bearings are cheap and fairly easy to replace.

  • Lose Wheel Bearing Question?

    Hello,

I was recently told I have a lose wheel bearing, and it is very important for it to be fixed asap. I was quoted ~$160 for it, $100 for labor and $60 for parts. Is this reasonable? And is there any way to check myself if it is lose? The mechanics had also said I needed a alignment, but changed their minds when I informed them I had one 2 months ago when they recommended it. They also told me my car had to have a %26quot;high mileage%26quot; oil, and the oil change was $45 which seemed high. Because my car has odd sized tires, I just spent $160 dollars on a new tire (including labor) today and last december. Because of this I want want to know how dangerous/real this new wheel bearing problem might be, to be sure I'm not wasting money I don't have. Thanks!Lose Wheel Bearing Question?Jack up the tire that has a bad wheel bearing. When the wheel is off of the ground, wiggle it back and forth to see if there is any looseness. If there is looseness, then your wheel bearing is probably bad. That price is pretty accurate too.Lose Wheel Bearing Question?Without knowing what kind of car it is I can't really guess on the price. You sound a little skeptical of your mechanic, maybe you should look around and get a second opinion. I couldn't tell you the difference between high mileage oil and low mileage oil but I can tell you that oil costs alot more than it used to. It has tripled in five years. But I'm sure your car does not need high mileage oil. Oil's job is to get dirty. It just gets dirty quicker when your car is older. change your oil sooner.Lose Wheel Bearing Question?well, depending on where your mechainic is but it sounds like there trying to upsell you.. first if you had a lose wheel bearing you would feel a vibration, and you would hear a nose coming from the wheel area.. but it mostly sounds like your mechanic is trying to upsell your car,.. And im very surpised that its only 160.00 to do a wheel bearing.Lose Wheel Bearing Question?$160 for a new bearing installed is a gift do it now.

high mileage oil? this is a lie, just use 10w40 oil with basic filter and change every 2500 miles

Is my wheel bearing going bad?

i think my 98 tahoe might have a bad wheel bearing. there is a sort of clicking noise coming from the front drivers side wheel that varies in speed in accordance to how fast im going. i just noticed it about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if someone could find this part for me online? ive looked for it but the prices vary from $6 to $120 and that just doesnt seem right. its a 1998 chevy tahoe LT with 4 wheel drive. also how long do i have to change it and what could happen if i dont?Is my wheel bearing going bad?Could be a bearing, but I would also check the U-joints at the wheel..as well as several other things...before you spend money on parts you don't need...get someone to check it..usaully they will do it for free..than get a second opinion..

How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?

I've changed the front wheel bearings on my front drive rabbit but wonder if it isn't easier on a GP. Are the bearings attached via a flange around the perimeter of the bearing ? Do they need to be pressed out and new ones pressed in ?

Thanks,How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?Its a sealed hub/bearing assembly. The entire hub is replaced as a unit.

Remove the wheel and tire, remove the brake caliper and rotor, remove the CV axle nut, disconnect the ABS sensor wire, un-bolt the hub assembly from the back, attach slide hammer to front of hub assembly and whack away. Disconnecting the ball joint may give you more room to play. Installation is of course the reverse (without the slide hammer).

How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?No they do not need pressed, they are a sealed bearing unit. There are retaining bolts around a flange, I believe there are three of them. Once you buy the bearings at the parts store you will see what I am talking about. It's an entire hub assembly with the bearing and lugs, etc. Take your caliper, caliper bracket, rotor, and axle nut off. The axle will will slide out of the splined hub, and then you simply unbolt it and unplug ABS if applicable. Its not hard to do at all, I've done a lot of them at work, I'm a mechanic. Good Luck! How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?You'll need to take the rotor and caliper off to be sure. If there are fasteners, then you're in business, otherwise the knuckles will have to be pulled off and the old bearing pressed out at a machine shop.

How Do I Fix The Grinding/squeaking from right wheel?

I own a 2004 monte carlo LS (3.4). I recently changed the wheel and hub bearing, when i went to put the caliper back on the pads fell off so when i assembled everything i compressed the brake and cleaned and reasembled the pads, caliper, and rotors. Now when I drive I can hear a sorta grinding/ squealing that follows the rotation of the wheel exactly regardless of speed. The noise is still there when I brake and turn left or right. Any Ideas? How Do I Fix The Grinding/squeaking from right wheel?Remove the wheel you worked on and check to make sure nothing is rubbing that you touched. Clean and reset anything you can get to. Check the bearing too, make sure nothing came off or loose. May just be something simple.

    Wheel bearing 97 Acura cl?

I have a 97 acura CL 2.2 with 100 thousand miles. I recently bought it from someone else so I don't know what has been done and what hasn't. There is a growling noise. It is most noticeable when driving around 20 or 30 miles an hour, but it is noticeable at higher speeds as well. I tried to swerve from side to side to see which side the bearing was on, and the sound doesn't change. Had the car looked at by a couple of mechanics, one checked the wheels for play up and down (12 and 6) and couldn't find much if any.

There is also a clicking noise coming from somewhere when you turn and accelerate. It happens most often when turning left, and sometimes when turning right. Especially when accelerating from a stop and turning left like pulling out onto a road, at about a 45 degree angle.

There isn't any bad vibration, even at freeway speeds. Also it doesnt get better or worse with application of the brakes. I know the back brakes need work, but it doesn't sound like grinding; more of a howling.

I thought halfshafts and wheel bearing. Had firestone diagnose. They said transmission had spun a bearing, and thats where the axel noise was coming from too. I had the transmission rebuilt by a different shop for a lot less money. they said that the bearings in the tranny were good, clutch was burnt up, so rebuilt anyway.

Both the bearing noise, and the clicking noise are back, but at least now my tranny shifts smooth.

What's going on? One halfshaft was fairly new, but I heard a lot of remanufactured halfshafts are junk anyway and fail often. How can i tell which wheel bearing is bad? How can I be sure it's halfshafts? Do wheel bearings sometimes fail and the sound doesn't change when you load or unload the wheels? Besides maintenance problems on wear and tear like a wheel bearing, the car is actually a steal. But it squeaks but once i start to get up to like a good 10 miles per hour the noise goes away. Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?

I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8L V6. A couple of days ago weird clicking noise started coming out of my rear passenger side wheel area. I took it to a mechanic today and he told me it was my wheel bearing and that i need to change it? Can someone tell its the wheel bearing and that it has to be changed just by listening to the noise? Do I really have to get it changed? How much would it cost? the mechanic told me it would take 2 1/2 hours to change it. Is that really such a long process? Can you recommend what kind of wheel bearing I should purchase because they would charge me $130 just for the wheel bearing plus labor while Autozone had a wheel bearing for $70.

I might not know much about cars but that doesn't mean that anyone has the right to make fun of me or my questions. If you dont have a helpful answer then dont respond and keep your jokes to yourself. thanks.Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?You can usually tell what is wrong just by listening to the noise. It could also be the CV Axles that are going bad.

As for time, that is quite long for changing a wheel bearing. A wheel bearing replacement (for one wheel) usually takes from 45min to 1 hr 30 min.

Regrading what bearing brand you should go with, I would suggest http://mibearings.com they have very good bearings (USA made) at very competitive prices. go to their front page, and fill out the form on the right. I would also mention the price quotes you got for the other companies.

I would not suggest Autozone bearings, they could be made in china. Check with the,Audi A4 Wheel Bearing problem...?I just had my wheel bearing replaced on my Audi Yesterday!

Yup, that is the noise for a bad wheel bearing. But what you need to figure out is if its coming from the Left Rear tire or the Right Rear tire. This will save time and money!

I bought my wheel bearing at www.blauparts.com

It was $45 for the part. With my mechanic, it took him an hour to replace. But of coarse he has been working on Audi's for 20 years so he can move fast! hah

So go to www.blauparts.com and the wheel bearing for the Audi A4 is only around $45.00

  • Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??

When I drive I hear a low rubbing sound within the car that sounds as if it is coming from a wheel. Some people have said it was a wheel bearing going bad because if I change lanes the tone of the rub will change too. I suspect it is a locked up brake caliper. Twice when I took it out of park and put the transmission in reverse, the car seemed to be locked up and then I heard a popping sound like the caliper just broke free. I am wondering if a bad wheel bearing would cause the wheel to lock up and make the same popping sound?? Any clues or advise as to how to determine which is bad?Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??I would say you have a real bad wheel bearing if it is popping like you say it is, take it to the shop and have them check the problem out before something leaves you stranded or catches fire from too much heat.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??if it sounds like a %26quot;clunk%26quot; sound then it might be your bearings, but if it is a different sound. it might be your caliper, and you might need new roders [sp?] becuase that would mean your caliper is lose and its rubbing onto your roders and wearing them down. someone just had the same problem with their car.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??A bad wheel bearing, a brake caliper, and if a front wheel drive a constant velocity joint (CV joint) can cause this grinding sound....most likely you have a dry worn out wheel bearing though.Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??In either even you should pull the wheel and inspect.. cuz either problem is gonna get you in deep CaCa eventually...

either is a pretty quick fix... though not cheap.. even if you have to replace the spindle... neither is a hard fix.. anyone that can work on a car can fix it in about an hour even if they are relativly a newbie...Locked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??one way is to jack up car put a shovel under front wheel and see if any movement in wheel' but the best bet is to take off wheel and check out bearingsLocked up caliper? Or bad wheel bearing??Jack up the car, spin the wheel and see if you can spin it by hand. If you can, pump the brakes, with it jacked up, and then get out and try to spin it by hand and see if there is any difference.

I would think that a locked up caliper wouldn't allow you to spin the wheel freely, so if you can spin the wheel while jacked up, and in neutral obviously, you will be able to hear the bad bearing, if that is in fact what it is.

    Anyhow, good luck.

Fix it sooner rather than later though. A bad bearing can damage other components.

How do you get use to 100mm wheels on in-line skates after having 80mm wheels?

I have been in line skating for years. Completed around 6 in line marathons and wanted to upgrade my skates from my previous Salomon (that they do not make anymore :( ). I bought K2 with 100mm wheels and they are so uncomfortable in the boot not to mention I can not skate smoothly/at ease. What do I do? I am looking to just change the wheels and bearing in my old skates these are so awkward for me- any suggestions? Does the 100mm get better, I am a worse skater with these? Do I go to a smaller wheel size? How do you get use to 100mm wheels on in-line skates after having 80mm wheels?I bought a new pair of Salomon Vitesse III's after Salomon quit making them and a mail order store was closing them out. Salomons fit me better than K2s or Rollerblades. Second best in the fit for my foot shape (a bit wide) are the Rollerblades, then the narrower K2s.

Not much you can do with the fit. Unfortunately, the frames for the 100mm wheels probably have 7 1/2%26quot; between the mounting holes and your Salomons (if they were the upper models) probably have the older 6 1/2%26quot; spacing. If you can find some mounting slots on the frame that are witin the possible adjustment of the boots, you could mount the new frames to your Salomon boots.

My next skates may be the Bont SemiRace (http://www.bont.com/index.htm), *IF* they fit my feet well.

If the boots are biting you around the ankles, you can try EZ-fit booties (http://www.ezeefitsports.com/booties.htm They add neoprene padding around the ankle bones.

The more stable you were on your old skates, the less learning you will need to do on the 100s.

First, make sure that the frames are positioned correctly. You should be able to adjust them both at the heel and ball of the foot.

Ideally, they should extend about the same amount in front and behind the boot. Some frames have multiple slots for positioning them.

Next adjust the frame at the heel so that you have neutral balance from side to side. They should be easy to stand with the wheels straight up and you should be able to roll the ankles either inward or outward a bit.

Last, adjust the front of the frame to be approximetly aligned with the space between you big and second toe.

That should leave you with skates that want to stay up.

The 100s will be tippier and you may need to tighten up your boots a little more to compensate at first.

You could put the wheels from your old skates (assuming that they are 80mm or 84mm) on the larger frames to get used to being a little higher off the ground.

I thought it was the transmission, but it's the wheel bearing?

My car, an automatic, didn't seem to change into the 5th gear. I took it to Aamco this morning to have the transmission checked out, and I fully expected they would tell me I need to have my transmission repaired or replaced.

Instead, they said it's the wheel bearing and that my transmission is just fine. My questions are:

    1. How much will this cost me, ball park figure? My car is a 1997 BMW 528.

    2. Is it possible that a wheel bearing can make the car feel and sound like it's not changing gears?I thought it was the transmission, but it's the wheel bearing?1. Between $500 to $800. These are sealed bearings and must be hydraulically pressed in.

    2. Yes, the noise they will generate will make it sound as if the last gear has not engaged.

Get this done ASAP as the heat generated by the bad bearing will cause other parts to be damaged. Example, the lugs will break off when you try to remove the lug nuts to change the tire.I thought it was the transmission, but it's the wheel bearing?1. labor wise id charge you 3.0 hrs for a front bearing

and 3.5hrs for a rear. not including 1.0 hr diagnosis time.

    2. if you see the rpm's dip when they normally would in 5th gear, then your trans is fine.

www.advanceautoparts.comWhere can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost?Auto parts stores used to carry those things. Try the autoparts store first. If they don't have it, you can remove the old bearing and bring it in to a bearing distributer's customer service desk. They probably carry them.

If all else fails, go to the Honda dealer parts department. The bearing will cost more, ($50?) but you will probabaly get the right part the first time.

Replacing the front wheel bearing requires removing the wheel, then the brake caliper must be lossened and relocated, then remove the brake rotor. Then you must remove the wheel hub, which requires a large metric socket that most shade tree mechanics don't have.

This will expose the bearing. The bearing must be pulled from the hub using a bearing puller. Then replaced.

Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?

I have a 1999 Sunfire with a 2.2 engine automatic transmission. The front driver wheel bearing/hub is beginning to squeal - How hard is this to change? Is there any specific information that I need to know before doing it?Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question? The front hub assm. is very easy to change. After getting the wheel off remove the spindle nut (the large nut in the center of the hub). The disconnect the ABS wires ( if equiped). Now the only thing left is to remove the mounting bolts. You must be carful when reinstalling the mounting bolts because if the bolts are over tightened the backing plate will crush the bearing and before you know it you will be replacing it all over again.Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?not hard, you should clean the rust off the knuckle before installing new one and watch out for wheel speed sensor if equiped, you might have to remove it but thats not a big dealFront Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?First of all usually the Hub doesn't make a squealing noise, should sound like a low humming at first then becomes a louder grinding noise...Do these test for me...whichever wheel you think it is...jack it up and see if you can move the tire from side to side or either up and down...if the hub is bad the tire will feel loose...If it is OK, the the squeal might be coming from your brake pads..You have a wear indicator that lets you know it is time to change your brake pads..Look for grooves cut into you rotor...If you need more help email me back..

  • How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?

Thinking that it's the tyre's noise, I changed my tyres. I was later told that it's the wheel bearing problem. I took a second opinion from another mechanic, but was told there's no problem with the wheel bearing. Can anyone advise?

Thank youHow to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?jack the front end up and spin the wheels, they should both feel and sound the same when you spin them, if they don't, figure out which one is kind of dragging and that one is the bad bearing. How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?Jack up the car and release the parking brake ( make sure all the other wheels are blcoked to prevent rolling). Use safety jacks also. Spin the tire and listen for bearing noise. It usually sounds like roller blades rolling on the ground. If you hear that noise it is time to replace the bearings. If the bearings in question are on a drive tire get a friend to drive the car slowly (2-4 mph) as you walk next to it and listen for the same noise. You might want to check the tranny if this does not help. How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?...i would replace the wheel bearings any its about $50 to $60 , the last thing you want is to be driving and your whole wheel and axle comes off!How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement? When you are driving at around 25mhp, on a strait low traffic road, turn the car slightly to the right, see if the noise goes away. When you turn, there is more %26quot;load%26quot; applied to the outside bearing and it makes it quiet during that time. If the noise doesn't go away doing this, your problem might be something else. How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement?Remove the wheel bearings, clean them thoroughly, and then inspect them carefully. You'll be looking for damaged rollers, gauling, signs of extreme heat, etc.How to confirm if the wheel bearing needs a replacement? What kind of noise is it making? Is it coming when the car is moving? If there is some movement then you could have a worn bearing.

If you hear noise from that wheel like a grinding or metallic rubbing sound too its highly likely you could have a worn wheel bearing.

Is this a bad wheel bearing?

My car shakes pretty bad when I'm driving. Its more of a wobble at 20/30 mph, but its more of a violent shaking at 40/50/60 mph. I jacked the front end up and shook the tires back and forth and it was a little loose. Not much, but there was some %26quot;leeway%26quot; with a faint knocking sound. Now, Im pretty sure the tire was the only thing moving, not the tie rod (thats the only thing i could see without taking the tire off). Is there anything else that could be the culprit besides the wheel bearing? If so, how can you find out?Yes it does. When I'm on the expressway going 55-60 mph, I'll try to keep it within that range or else if I let off the gas its tends to shakes slightly more. It seems as if I keep my foot on the gas, then it wont be as bad of a vibration as if i would let off. Is it a pain to change out the bearing yourself?

http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/championvette/Lillian/?action=view%26amp;current=P4280135.flvIs this a bad wheel bearing?Number one you should do that test with the tire on to give you more leverage. Number two the should with the tire on support the lower control arm and load it with all the vehicle weight. The grab the tire top and bottom and do the same wiggle type test as you did for the wheel bearing and tie rod ends. The trouble you are describing sound more like a tire with a separated belt or possibly a C/V joint that is sticking. With both front wheels off the ground have someone start the car and pull in drive. Have them release the brakes and you look at both front tires. They should be smooth with no big bumps or side ways movement in them. If they have movement one way or the other it could be the tires or possibly a bent rim. If all seems good then you could have an axle shaft sticking. You will need to go to the repair shop for this one must likely. Is this a bad wheel bearing?if it a bad wheel bearing when u driving and hear a humming sound or sumtimes a screeching sound most of the time it is and if ur car has more than 100 thousand miles on it its time to change themIs this a bad wheel bearing?try tighting the big bolt in the center

    Wheel Bearings?

How do you change the wheel bearing in a 1999 ford Escort front wheel drive,is it easy or are they pressed on and have to be serviced somewhere.Wheel Bearings?Well you need the special tools to do the work. Such as a big inpack wrench. A Slap-hammper with wheel adapter to put the fub apart. Bearing puller. And the proper tools to put it back together. Otherwise the drive axle could damage. And you need the tools to remoce the races. And installing tool or a press with the proper dies. The are best done in a shop with right tools. There are some model you hap to replace whole unit. The there is a real safety question. Cause you hap to take presure off the a fram.Wheel Bearings?if i'm not mistaken, the front end bearings are part of the hubs, meaning that they are pressed in the hubs. U have to remove the rotors, and also remove the steering knuckles. then send the steering knucles to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced.Wheel Bearings?Hydraulic press is needed.

  • Rear wheel bearing?

can any1 give me instructions on how to change a rear wheel bearing on my 1996 pontiac voyager minivan?Rear wheel bearing?Pontiac makes a minivan?

    ADDED:

    It's a complete hub assembly. +/- $80.00 each.

and just unbolts from the rear axle.

    ADDED:

    Rear drum.

    Remove the wheel.

    Remove the brake drum.

Remove the bolts from the BACK side of the axle.

It may be a pain in the @$$ to slide out as it probably rusted it's self in the axle tube.

Then reverse the procedure.Rear wheel bearing?1st off you're gonna need to buy the whole hub assembly not just the bearing. that will cost around 85ish

is it disc or drum brakes? probably disc. so:

    1st: take off your tire

2nd: remove your brake caliper assembly (theres two bolts holding your caliper together on the back side one on top one on bottom and if i remember right its an allen bit)

    3rd: remove your brake rotor

4th: remove your drive axle nut

5th: the hub is held into the housing by three tabs each with a bolt in it, the front part of the hub (that you can spin) itself has three holes in it, THERE IS ONLY ONE HOLE OUT OF THE THREE THAT THE BOLT WILL COME OUT OF ITS CALLED THE %26quot;PEEKHOLE%26quot;!!! so you will need to spin the front part of the hub so it lines up with the bolts each time you take one out

6th: slide the hub out of its housing (make sure your whole rear end is level it will make removing the hub easier and not doing so could damage the splines on your axle, etc...

7th: put your new hub back on and redo all this crap

oh make sure to be careful with your brake caliper assembly when your ready to put your caliper back on your going to need to depress the plunger back inside the caliper with a 3 inch %26quot;c clamp%26quot; also make sure you dont be too rough with the caliper because you dont want to mess up the sensor position.

hope this helps, sorry for the lengthRear wheel bearing?lift da car then unscrew the screws then pull it out then put the new on in the screw it on the your DONE :)Rear wheel bearing?Instructions as follows . . .

It is on the front passenger side and i have aftermarket lockin hubs put on a year ago. There seems to be a rubbing noise coming from that side and when i lock in the four wheel drive it gets worse any ideas? How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?Sometimes the manual locking hubs can make noise. My warns were making more of a clicking sound and I look the lock ring off the outside of the outer axle and this took care of the noise. That ring is not really necessary because, for there to be a problem the axle would have to slide out a full 6 inches to disengage the hub, if this happens you have something far worse to worry about. It may seem to go away at higher speeds, but it is usually masked by wind and tire noise. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?it would be a good idea to take your hub apart, see how much dirt and debree is inside, when you lock the hub in it moves internaly, and may be grinding up dirt. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?to check a wheel beering jack the vehicle up so the tire is off the ground put a jack stand under vehicle for safety grab the tire one hand on top one hand on the bottom rock the tire if you have play in the wheel then you need to check out wheel bearing(don't rock tire side to side).Take apart hub inspect the hub assembly also inspect the axle

your best bet is a press.....less headacheCan you please give me some advice on how to change out wheel bearings?I'm not 100% sure, but there should be a bearing cap in the center of the brake rotor/hyb.Use a slip-joint pliers to remove cap, there will be a cotter pin going through the slotted nut.Remove pin, remove nut,rotor/hub should just about fall off.Remove inner and outer bearings, clean and reinstall new bearings with fresh grease. This is the normal procedure for a rear wheel drive car, yours is front wheel drive I assume, might be different. The library should have a repair manual if this wrong.Have fun.Can you please give me some advice on how to change out wheel bearings?A quick search at Advance shows they sell them as a bearing and hub assembly...the cheaper of the two there goes for $93...I don't know why you took off the control arm and ball joint, all you have to do is remove the brake caliper and axle nut (very tight), slip the whole hub off, and put the new one on...tightening the axle nut is very important. Oh yes, the four bolts you mention should be the holding bolts for the strut assembly, that's where it actually attaches to the suspension.

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?

I bought a honda civic coupe recently .

yesterday i was driving my mom back from work , and as i was parking , i turned my wheels and i could hear a screeching or shreiking sound coming from the Right Front Wheels .

i did some research on Yahoo answers and it seems that

this could have been a defective wheel bearing or a cv joint .

i called the service center and the manager told me it could be the mud thing making that sound , and he adviced me to check tire pressure . So i did and seemed the air pressure was low on the Right front wheel and put some air in . But the sound didn't %26quot;go away%26quot; . it sounds like 2 thin metal pieces sliding each other ( it's a high pitched shreiking/ screeching sound) i dn't understand what's going on . I dn't have a job right now , looking for a job , should i take it to the honda service center where i bought it ( will it be covered ) , or any service center ...

I was wondering if that exactly is the problem , and how much will it cost me to fix itHow much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?I don't think is the cv joints or the bearings, since the bearings will sound (while you're driving) like you are driving a pick-up truck with huge wheels on it, (you know the sound they make)

And if it's the cv joints it will only and ONLY when you turn to either side (clack, clack, clack noise), if it's screeching noise it's the brake pads, check to see if the disks are smooth, that could be the problem, if they 're not change the pads, that should fix the problem!, BUT if they tell you to change the cv joints it's about $70 labor, plus the parts, each side, if you don;t have the money just tell them that you want the affected side (even though the Honda service they'll try to tell you you need to do both) DO ONLY THE ONE, then when you have the money do the other one, i don't think is the bearings...

But whatever you do don't take to the dealer it's gonna cost you a lot!!!, if it's not under warranty off-course.

What you can do to make sure it's not the cv-joints is this:

Turn the wheels to one side and look inside (the other side where you put the nuts that hold the tire) and you'll see a large piece of rubber like a cup, that's called the %26quot;boot%26quot; they'll have a metal ring that holds it in place, if that's loose or you see grease all over it, that's the problem, but like i said before i think is your brake pads. GOOD LUCK!!!How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?Replace wheel bearings...cheap - CV Joints...very expensive, Tonto! How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?If it's under warranty, you ought to be covered. It sounds more like a wheel bearing than the CV joint.

Check the rubber boot between the wheel and the transaxle. Look around the boot as well. These things can get a hole and throw grease out. Look for a pattern of grease around the boot. If there is a hole, yes it's the CV joint and it' gonna be expensive. I've never done a Honda CV, but you're looking at $350 +

How do you change the wheel bearings?

I have a 2001 BMW 325i. I believe that we need to change the wheel bearing (passenger rear). You can check my other questions in case the diagnosis is incorrect...(help??)

Does anyone have any diagrams, instructions on how to change them?

Is it necessary to have them %26quot;pressed%26quot; on/off? (that would determine if I could do this at home or not.

Please help, this is my sons car and he is in the military and doesn't have time or cash to spend on it. So mom %26amp; dad are trying to help them out.

Any advice or websites will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

stormphyreHow do you change the wheel bearings? You described the sound as %26quot;something dropped and dragged? %26quot;. A wheel bearing would usually make a growling sound, gradually get worse, and have to be really bad to lock up the wheel- unusual.

Many BMWs with disc brakes in the rear had a separate parking brake which was a drum brake inside the brake disc. If it's rear discs, look for the parking brake cable. If the cable is attached to the brake caliper, never mind (I assume you've tried removing the caliper)

If the cable goes inside the backing plate behind the wheel, you might try removing the brake disc and look at the small drum brake behind it.

Replacing rear wheel bearings requires too many special tools and experience. I believe it'd be Independent rear suspension? You may be able to remove the swing arm and take it to the shop (save towing). Call ahead first - they may prefer to do it on the car.

Cars with solid axles, the rear axle and backing plate usually is held on by four bolts on end of axle. It varies- repair manual helpful for that kind of thing. How do you change the wheel bearings?Take the advise of the above answer This is something that if you don't know what your doing you can cause more damage. Yes a rear bearing is pressed on to the axle.. are you sure its a bearing.. I can't see a 8 year old BMW having that kind of problem. those usually last for years and years.. unless run with out oil..

You will need a hydraulic press for this operation.

It still is a DIY job. I suggest purchasing new wheel bearing(s) from http://mibearings.com (fill out the form on the right)

Once you get your new wheel bearing, you can take your old hub (with the old bearing) and the new bearing into a local repair shop. They will press out the old bearing and press in the new for much less than a complete job.

You can then take the hub with the new bearing and put it back into your BMW.

The rest is just wrench work.
